Esok tak pernah Mati

Gambar ini saya corat-coret dengan bolpoin pilot biasa, seperempat abad yang lalu saat masih remaja culun galau, pelampiasan sehabis mampus ujian Matematika yang susah muntah di sekolah bahasa persiapan kuliah. Meniru foto yang kebetulan muncul di sampul majalah yang tersedia di ruang santai, lalu saya pajang di depan pintu kamar untuk menyombongkan ke teman-teman seasrama 🖊️🖼️ 

Bukan selera secara khusus, hanya saja waktu masih balita, saya sering dibangunkan nenek tengah malam untuk menemani beliau menonton serial yang dibintangi orang ini, katanya mirip dengan paman saya (mungkin karena televisinya buram bersemut di masa itu 🖥️🐜😹) 

Berhubung pemerannya sedang naik daun, wajahnya dianggap sebagai standar ras arus utama holiwut masa itu yang seputar WASP. Atas saran teman-teman asrama, selanjutnya saya berusaha menggambar tokoh-tokoh ras lain yang dari Asia-Afrika (tapi ujungnya masih arus utama juga 🙈🎦🎭)  (FB)

I doodled this with Pilot ballpoint pen a quarter-century ago, back when I was still an anxious innocent (?) teenager, to overcome an existensial crisis after a disastrous vomit-inducing Math exam just around summer solstice at the college preparatory Japanese language school. I imitated a photo on a magazine cover available in the lounge then installed the drawing at the door of my dormitory room to brag off to my neighbors 

He was a favorite of my grandmother who used to wake me up around midnight when I was still a toddler, to accompany her to watch the tv series starring this person as she thought his face was similar to my uncle (maybe because the television was blurry at that time) 

Move forward to my prep days his fame was on the rise, becoming standard of the mainstream WASP race, so on the suggestion of my dorm mates, the next project I tried to diverse by drawing other prominent figures from Asia-Africa background for a challenge (but in the end they were still mainstream too, weren't they) 

Hari berikutnya, seorang tetangga asrama dari Hungaria menyelipkan kliping koran bergambar orang ini dari dompetnya (?) meminta saya menggambarnya. Ukurannya lebih kecil dari telapak tangan saya ✋💂   

Kali ini, saya tidak akrab dengan raut wajahnya karena belum mengikuti serial televisi yang dia bintangi. Saya berjuang untuk menelusuri ikal rambut, lengkung alis, cibiran bibir, dan kemudian menyerah pada kerut dahi. Ternyata saya belum menguasai seni wajah cemberut 😾🎨 

Saya menganggap ini belum selesai karena saya hanya menggambarnya dengan pensil keras pucat dan masih belum puas dengan kerutannya. Sungguh tersiksa untuk mengakui kepada tetangga kamar saya bahwa saya tidak mampu memenuhi permintaannya 🙈😿  

Untungnya kamera masa kini membuat garisnya cukup gelap untuk terlihat rapi sekarang 📷📝  (FB) 

The next day, one dearly neighbor slipped a small newspaper clipping of this guy from her wallet (?) to my hand and asked me to draw him. The picture was smaller than my tiny palm 

This time, I was not familiar with his features since I have not watched any of his series at all. I struggled to comprehend the frizzy hair, the curly eyebrows, the sneering lips, and then gave up at the wrinkling forehead. Apparently I haven't mastered the art of frowning  

I considered this unfinished since I only drew it with a pale hard pencil and was still not satisfied with the frown. It was tormenting to admit to her that I could not fulfill her request  

Fortunately the camera made the lines dark enough to be presentable today 

Beberapa bulan kemudian, karena sudah mulai adaptasi menonton drama Jepang, saya mengenal yang ini. 

Menurut keluarga asuh saya saat itu, dia ini orang paling beken sekampung. Jadi terdorong untuk bikin ini buat pajangan pengusir nyamuk menggantikan babang jimbong di depan pintu asrama. 

Mengarsirnya jauh lebih santai, masih sempat hupas-hapus di tengah suasana syahdu menyambut musim gugur 🍁🍂 

Lalu pernah dipakai untuk pengamatan golden section di kelas pengantar gambar teknik ✍🏾📐 

Saya sangka ketinggalan di lab sebelum pulang, ternyata terselip belasan tahun di antara berkas-berkas administrasi. Sudah bulukan akibat panas dan lembap 😿🌦️ 

Gara-gara ucing saya si Kumi mau lahiran sebelum lebaran 2019 saya membongkar kardus, terpaksa isinya disortir, eh ketemu deh. Bayi-bayinya jadi harus dinamai Kimu, Muta, & Taku 🐈🌟 (IG)

A few months later, because I started watching Japanese drama adaptations, I got to know this one.

According to my host family at the time, he was the most famous person in the country. So I was compelled to make this for a mosquito repellent display to replace uncle jimbong in front of the dorm door. 

I was more relaxed hatching this, with enough time to erase and replace in the midst of the serene atmosphere of welcoming autumn   

Then it was used for observing the golden section in the introductory engineering drawing class  

I thought I left it in the lab before going home, but turned out it was tucked for a dozen years in between the administrative files, feathered due to heat and humidity   ️

Because my cat Kumi was about to give birth before Eid of 2019, I unpacked a cardboard box, I found this when sorting the contents. The babies then have to be named Kimu, Muta & Taku
